Phoenix Rovers FC was formed in June of 2001 when a collective of friends decided that another club was needed for the Ballymun area to cater for the growing population in the region. Paul Lee, Colin Lee, Stuart Lee, Denis Delaney, Tommy McKevitt, David Phoenix and Rory O'Donnell were amongst the core group who helped make the dream fast become a reality. Upon formation, the club had it's home ground at Naul Park before eventually moving to its former base in Poppintree Park.
Rovers' first ever competitive game was versus Coultry Wanderers, a game in which five of the Lee brothers took part. The club had originally entered into the Amateur Football League (AFL) with moderate success, narrowly missing out on a cup final appearance.
The official club strip was Red & Black which, after a brief change to Navy/Blue, the club unanimously decided to return to in 2007. Phoenix Rovers joined the Athletic Union League (AUL) in 2002 where it still competes to this day. In the 2003 close season there was a split when a group of players, along with a former manager, parted company to form form a breakaway club. Luckily Rovers survived and continued in existence playing in the AUL where the club has seen steady progress, usually finishing usually in the top half of the table each season.
The club always feel it imperative to give an honorable mention to Honorary President Mr Jack Lee, whose contribution both on and off the field was a catalyst in the club's survival. In recognition, the annual Player Of The Year also receives a perpetual shield in Lee's name.
June 2004 saw Paul Lee pass the managerial torch to Des O'Donnell who has steadily established the club within the AUL as well as gaining notoriety in local footballing circles. December 2006 saw Phoenix Rovers collect it's first silverware as a club when the team won the Robert Alfred Memorial Trophy, a local soccer tournament played amongst usually teams from Dublin 9 & 11.
The official website www.phoenixroversfc.com launched in Christmas 2007 which gave a brand new interactive dimension to the club, it supporters and players.
After a brief hiatus from Team Manager duty, May 2008 seen the re-appoinment of Des O'Donnell as Team Manager alongside newly appointed coaching partner and then-club captain Michael Leonard. Summer '08 saw the club made huge strides by announcing the launch of a brand new Sunday team which was entered into the AUL Division 3 Sunday competition with Gerry McGuinness named Sunday Team Manager.
In another major development, the club also relocated to Lanesborough Park, Dublin 11 to a brand new home pitch on which both teams now play. Although leaving Poppintree Park was initially considered a difficult decision, it was widely agreed that the opportunity to move to Lanesborough was too good to pass up.
Together with an excellent group of players, the belief and hope throughout the club is that the season 2008/2009 will see the club flourish and prosper.
